CONVENTO OREJA SELECCION DE FAMILIA 2019

In Convento Oreja we put in the elaboration of all our wines, in addition to the best Ribera del Duero grapes and the excellence in their elaboration, an important dose of passion. In this case, we have also selected for the last three years the wine from the barrels that could best transmit that passion to you.

The result is exciting. And we have named it Selección de Familia.

Convento Oreja Selección de Familia 2019. A very exclusive wine of which just 1717 bottles have been bottled.

At the beginning of October 2019, with the Tinta del País ( Tempranillo ) grapes from a unique plot in the highlands of Mélida  in Peñafiel at almost 950 meters of altitude, a spectacular red wine fermented.

A dry and warm winter and a spring in the same line led us to a somewhat hotter than usual summer that led to the harvest of this plot on October 1st.

Once the malolactic fermentation is over, we fill 24 French oak barrels from different cooperages, half of them new. And there, the adventure began.

The Ribera del Duero Council has qualified the vintage as "EXCELLENT" due to the intensity of color, the frankness of the aromas and a balanced acidity that suggest a great behavior after maturation in barrels.

As in the previous vintage, we closely monitored the 24 barrels. During the months that it remained in the barrel, we tasted and analyzed each one of them, doing tests, racking and analyzing again and again. At the end of the first 14 months we selected 6 barrels that we felt had the potential to make an exceptional cuvee.

After 20 months we decided that this was the wine we wanted as our Selección de Familia 2019. This year we were surprised that some of the barrels that made it to the final were not new barrels. Two one-year-old barrels stood out that had already helped to age our 2018 crianza and helped to assemble this new wine that seemed exceptional to us.

A long and fun process that has brought us to this very special wine

A wine with a beautiful garnet color with aromas of black fruit and a touch of balsamic highly integrated with spicy memories. On the palate it is very structured, broad and, above all, very velvet. It is very balanced, fresh and persistent.

It is a fantastic wine at the moment and probably a wine that due to its characteristics will evolve wonderfully in the bottle for many years.

CONVENTO OREJA SELECCION DE FAMILIA 2018

In Convento Oreja we put in the elaboration of all our wines, in addition to the best Ribera del Duero grapes and the excellence in their elaboration, an important dose of passion. In this case, we have also selected for the last three years the wine from the barrels that could best transmit that passion to you.

The result is exciting. And we have named it Selección de Familia.

Convento Oreja Selección de Familia 2018. A very exclusive wine of which just 1155 bottles have been bottled.

In October 2018, with the Tinta del País ( Tempranillo ) grapes from a unique plot in the highlands of Mélida in Peñafiel at almost 950 meters of altitude, a spectacular red wine fermented.

A rainy winter and a spring in the same line with rains until the end of June led us to a somewhat colder than usual summer that led to the harvest of this plot on October 12, late for what we have lately but matching the traditional harvest date in our area.

Once the malolactic fermentation is over, we fill 24 French oak barrels from different cooperages, half of them new. And there, the adventure began.

The wine already in the tank had a great intensity of color and a wealth of fruit aromas and enormous floral notes.

Although the Ribera del Duero Council had only rated the vintage as "VERY GOOD" mainly due to the big amount of grapes harvested at that vintage, we believed that this vintage, from this particular plot, was going to be exceptional.

We thought that after such a complicated vintage of 2017, nature had given us a wine with tremendous potential and we decided to challenge ourselves.

And the challenge was to make a detailed follow-up of the 24 barrels, in a champions league that faced every so often the evolution of this wine among all the barrels. A kind of competition that ended in a selection of some barrels, chosen from among those 24, that had the capacity that, once assembled, would provide us with a wine that reflected the emotion with which we faced trying to improve that wine that Nature had provided to us.

For many months we worked and enjoyed the competition, tasting the barrels, commenting, analyzing what each one of them could contribute to the final cuvee, doing tests. Every so often we discarded some of them until after the first year we decided to choose 4 finalists.

We were still not sure how far we would go with these 4 barrels and we gave ourselves a few more months to see the evolution. After 22 months we decided that this was the wine we wanted to be our FAMILY SELECTION. We could not rule out any barrels because each one of them contributed something different to the wine and the union of the 4 was fantastic.

As you can see, a long but funny process that has driven us to this very special wine.
